The Naim NAP 500 DR , the first in the 500 reference series, is a monumental example of Naim's amplifier. Its design has been honed over six years of collaboration with suppliers of the necessary components. Each piece takes several days to assemble by Naim's most experienced technicians in Salisbury. It's the attention to detail, along with the amazing power output, that makes the NAP 500 sound so natural and dynamic.
Statement's flagship sound reinforcement system took more than a decade to create. This project brought all of Naim's expertise and craftsmanship to bear - and resulted in a number of technological breakthroughs. Recently, two technologies from the Statement project were introduced in a key series of power amplifiers. The NAP 500 now uses the new NA009 transistors, first introduced in Statement. This key component took over a year to develop, and with the help of semiconductor manufacturing partner Naim, the best sound quality was achieved. The NAP 500 also uses Naim Audio's discrete control technology (same as the Statement) to provide the stable, low-noise power that is vital to the musical sound of audio equipment.
These two new technologies, combined with a number of minor improvements to some of the internal components and layout, make the NAP 500 DR sound even more musical.
The Naim NAP 500 DR delivers 140 watts per channel (into 8 ohms) and is capable of running into 2 ohms for extended periods of time without loss of quality. The double-shell design, in classic Naim style, includes a separate box for the 500 PS power supply. Each NAP 500 channel has ten local control steps. To better reduce mains induced interference, the transformer and power supply primary circuits are housed in a separate enclosure (500 PS) that supplies twelve volts DC to the amplifier.
Bridging improves the turn-on and turn-off time of the output transistors, improves overall circuit protection, and reduces spurious coupling between input and output so that even at peak power, no speaker current flows through signal ground. The NAP 500 uses special output transistors (NA009) specially designed as a result of many months of hard work with suppliers. The PCB topology has been carefully considered to reduce distortion and dependency on input voltage. In addition, much attention has been paid to the aspect of thermal noise, which is very important when designing a power amplifier.
