Mid-Side works great where you need control over the amount of "space" in a recording. It's great for studio recordings, and its convenience and flexibility make it very useful for recording live performances with good intelligibility.
Zoom MSH-6 "Mid-Side" literally allows you to adjust the balance and width of the stereo image after the recording has been made, which is very important in film, video and television projects. The MSH-6 looks like a single microphone, but contains two microphones inside, stacked one above the other. One of the microphones in the MSH-6 is unidirectional (most sensitive to the signal in front of it, and least sensitive to sources from behind or from the sides), and the second is bidirectional (most sensitive to the signal in front of it and behind it, and least sensitive to sources from the sides) . Inside the capsule, the unidirectional ("Mid") is turned forward and picks up sources directly in the center in front of you, while the bidirectional ("Side") is located perpendicular to the first, capturing the sound space from the sides.
Peculiarities:
- Microphone type: unidirectional and bidirectional
- Sensitivity:
- -37 dB, 1 kHz at 1 Pa (unidirectional)
- -39 dB, 1 kHz at 1 Pa (bidirectional)
- Input gain: up to 42.5 dB
- Maximum input sound pressure:
- 120 dB SPL (unidirectional)
- 122 dB SPL (bidirectional)
