The Hegel H120 Black is a black integrated amplifier with a clear OLED display. The round aluminum front panel is equipped with a 6.35mm headphone jack and 2 controls. On the rear - inputs for analog signals on XLR and 2 pairs of RCA connectors. Digital outputs - 3 optical, USB and 1 coaxial, as well as an Ethernet connector.

The Hegel H120 Black is an integrated amplifier with network functions in black. The clean lines here are complemented by a clear OLED display with white characters, which makes the overall amplifier very modern and minimalist in design. The delicately rounded aluminum front panel features a 6.35mm headphone jack and two knobs that smoothly change the volume and allow you to select the input. On the rear - inputs for analog signals on XLR and two pairs of RCA connectors, one of which can be switched to constant gain mode (Home Theater input). Digital outputs - three optical, USB and one coaxial, as well as an Ethernet connector that allows the device to stream music via UPnP / DLNA or AirPlay.
The Hegel H120 Black amplifier can be integrated into smart home systems controlled from a phone or tablet. Included is a remote control that allows you to control all the functions and can even turn off the display.
Completing the description of the possible connections, it is worth mentioning the preamplifier outputs for connecting a power amplifier or subwoofer, as well as powerful acoustic terminals that provide any type of
connections. SoundEngine 2 technology pushes away the traditional use of negative feedback while incorporating a form of localized positive feedback that delivers outstanding results. Simply put, this proprietary technology achieves very low levels of distortion, very high damping factor, providing total control over the speakers, much more efficient than you would expect from a 75-watt amplifier. Digital circuits support 24bit/192kHz resolution over coax, optical and network interfaces, while USB input is limited to 24bit/96kHz.
Hegel H120 Black has Apple Airplay, Spotify Connect, IP Control, Control4 and UPnP streaming. Additional features will be offered free of charge using a simple software update. All inputs are configured to bypass volume, so you can integrate them into your home theater or (for example) Bluesound or Sonos. Whatever you want, you can do it with Hegel H120 Black .
Hegel packs the many benefits of its various components into one slim, stylish package. The Hegel H120 Black amplifier sounds much more powerful than you would expect from it and copes with complex speaker systems without any problems.
Overview of the Hegel H120 amplifier
Hegel has changed a lot in the years between the release of the H80, H90 and H120 . The H80 was one of the first models in the company's "updated" lineup, featuring improved versions of the time-honored "SoundEngine" circuitry. The design of the Hegel H120 Black uses several of the company's key technologies at once under such expressive names as "DualAmp" and "DualPower", along with the aforementioned "SoundEngine".
Basically, "DualAmp" technology separates the voltage and current amplification stages between two different amplifying modules, while "DualPower" is designed to supply current from a small power supply to the input/voltage amplification stage in the preamp section and to the current output stage of the amplifier path. power with separate taps from independent power supplies feeding the transformer. "SoundEngine" is a form of local debugging instead of global feedback that turns a Class AB amplifier into something close to Class A in terms of sound quality. Together they create Hegel's signature "organic" sound that is not tied to a specific engineering concept. , but more so with listening tests and a generalized application of technology to ensure that the amplifier sounds as natural as possible.
The new DAC section still includes the usual S/PDIF and USB interfaces, but now also allows streaming over Ethernet. The 24-bit DAC is based on PCM with a frequency of 192 kHz. Those looking for higher DSD performance from Hegel should look into one of the two separate DACs, as MQA is not currently part of Hegel. This section also got its own designation in the nomenclature: "USB", as you might guess, indicates a USB input, but indicating this tells you to effectively use your own sound card on the USB input. Meanwhile, the proprietary "SynchroDAC" system is a system of internal jitter suppression and synchronized upsampling, and is in direct contrast to the now more common asynchronous conversion used in most USB converters. Hegel points out that asynchronous technology, which converts jitter into signal amplitude errors, thereby negatively affects the digital data at the input.
The front panel material is now composite instead of metal, though unless you're planning on using the Hegel H120 Black for a "guess the material" game, that should make as much of a difference to performance as does the logo on the shipping carton. In that case, the Hegel H120 Black is indeed less efficient than its predecessor, at least on paper.
The amplifier's high damping factor of over 2000 doubles the electrical performance of the power supply compared to its predecessor. In practice, the only real difference between the H90 and H120 is the addition of an XLR input and increased power. It features the same easy-to-read fluorescent display, supports Ethernet streaming, and has one coaxial digital input, three Toslink optical inputs, and one USB input. Apple Airplay is also supported.
Hegel has avoided wasting money on creating custom applications of its own and recommends using a combination of QNAP NAS, Twonky (for NAS controller) and Linn Kinsky (as media player for iPhone users) or Bubble UPnP (for Android users) . You can also use PlugPlayer or a lot of other applications, because the "blessing" (which for some may be a "curse") of UPnP technology is just the letter "U", which stands for "universal".
Another way to listen to music is through headphones, and here Hegel again excels in comparison with built-in amplifiers. This is far from a minor issue, and while there are better standalone headphone amplifiers, this is a very good example of what can be done in a dedicated two-channel amplifier.
The feature of the Hegel H120 Black is that this amplifier follows the commandment "do no harm". It just takes the signal and makes it sound like it should through the speakers. If the music is well recorded, the sound will be good. If the music is badly recorded, it will still sound fine. But the thing about the Hegel H120 Black amplifier is that it can do it with far more exotic speakers than you might imagine for an amplifier in this price range. And with acoustics that are more appropriate for the price, the system will sound just fine.
