Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is immeasurable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to convoluted, hallucinatory stream-of-consciousness tales. As a vocalist, he shattered the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the role of a vocalist in popular music. As a musician, he pioneered several genres of pop music, including electrified folk rock and country rock.
And this is just the tip of his achievements. Dylan's strength was evident during his peak popularity in the 60's, the Beatles' shift towards introspective songwriting in the mid 60's would never have happened without him, but his influence carried over several generations to come as many of his songs became popular. standards and his best albums have become the undisputed classics of the rock and roll canon. Dylan's influence on all folk music has been just as powerful, and he marks a turning point in its development in the 20th century, marking the genre's transition from traditional songwriting to personal songwriting.
These 14 tracks, produced by John Hammond, were recorded in New York in November 1961. Early in his career, Bob Dylan performs these tracks unaccompanied with vocals on guitar and harmonica. "Song to Woody" is one of the first songs written by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on his self-titled debut album Bob Dylan in 1962. The song conveys Dylan's understanding of the Woody Guthrie folk legend. The melody is based on the Guthrie song "Massacre of 1913". The song also contains references to celebrities such as Cisco Houston, Sonny Terry and Leadbelly, whose music Dylan appreciated. The line "came with dust and gone with the wind" quotes the line "we come with dust and we sail with the wind" in Guthrie's song "Pastures of Plenty".
Talkin' New York is the second song on Bob Dylan's self-titled first album. It describes his feelings upon arriving in New York, his time spent in coffee houses in Greenwich Village, and his life before getting a record deal. The lyrics express the difficulty he had to find gigs due to his unique sound: “You talk like a hillbilly; we need folk singers here.” This early example of Dylan's songwriting demonstrates many of the traits that would later become synonymous with his work. For example, the line “Many people do not have enough food on the table. But they have a lot of forks and knives. And they need to cut something." many have cited as an early example of Dylan's lyrical wit.
