Vinyl LP Jethro Tull: Aqualung
Aqualung is the fourth studio album by British progressive rock band Jethro Tull, released on 19 March 1971 by Chrysalis Records. It is widely regarded as a concept album with a central theme of "the difference between religion and God", although the band stated that they had no intention of making a concept album and that only a few songs have a unifying theme. Aqualung's success marked a turning point in the band's career, which went on to become a major radio and touring artist.
Recorded at London's new Island Records recording studio, the album was the first to feature keyboardist John Evan as a permanent member, the first to feature new bassist Jeffrey Hammond, and the last to feature Clive Bunker on drums, who left the band shortly after the album's release. The album features more acoustic material than previous releases and, inspired by photographs of homeless people along the Thames embankment taken by vocalist Ian Anderson's wife Jenny, it contains a number of recurring themes that address religion and Anderson's personal experiences.
Aqualung is Jethro Tull's best-selling album, selling over seven million copies worldwide. It was well received by critics and appeared on several music magazines' best albums lists. The album spawned two singles, "Hymn 43" and "Locomotive Breath".
