Microphone Neumann KMS 104 Plus
The KMS 104 and KMS 105 microphones were developed by Neumann engineers to ensure optimal vocal reproduction on stage and are the best choice for responsible live performances today.
The KMS 104 and KMS 105 microphones were developed by Neumann engineers to ensure optimal vocal reproduction on stage and are the best choice for responsible live performances today.
Due to their low self-noise and uncolored off-axis sound, both microphones are excellent match for personal monitoring applications. The KMS 104 uses a cardioid pick-up capsule for effective rejection of sounds coming from behind the microphone.
The high acoustic resolution and near-linear frequency response of these microphones guarantee consistently high sound quality in challenging stage environments. The KMS series microphones use studio-grade condenser capsules to faithfully reproduce every nuance of the human voice.
Compared to other stage microphones, mainly dynamic ones, the KMS series provides better intelligibility, extended frequency response and more accurate signal edges.
Both models use carefully tuned acoustic filters and transformerless impedance preamplifiers capable of handling high sound pressure levels. Thanks to this, even with strong blowing and explosive sounds, distortion does not occur. Hissing and hissing sounds are reproduced naturally, which is typical only for condenser microphones. Moreover, the design of the acoustic filters mentioned above allows the microphones to retain their proper directivity even at low frequency sounds. Thus, these filters allow the use of high gain factors when scoring concerts without the risk of feedback.
Since vocal microphones are usually located close to the sound source, the KMS series microphones use electronic circuitry to compensate for the “proximity effect” (bass boost) that matches the characteristics of the capsules.
In addition, both microphones are equipped with high-pass filters with a fixed cutoff frequency of 120 Hz (–3 dB attenuation, measured in free field). The dynamic range of the KMS 104/105 is 132 dB, the maximum sound pressure level is 150 dB.
The low self-noise level, not exceeding 18 dB-A, allows you to use high sensitivity when working with both microphones without the risk of adding noise to the useful signal. As a result, the performer can hold the microphone further away from the mouth and therefore move more freely around the stage.
Thanks to the use of transformerless output stages, microphone signals can be transmitted over longer cable lengths without loss of quality.
The KMS 104 and KMS 104 plus use a capsule with a cardioid pickup pattern, which provides effective suppression of rear sounds. The KMS 105's super-cardioid pickup pattern further suppresses off-axis spurious sounds within a full 180° hemisphere. KMS 104 plus, compared to KMS 104, is characterized by a greater impact in the bass region. In close cooperation with professional musicians, after numerous practical tests, the KMS 104 plus has been specially optimized for female rock and pop vocals.
Stage microphones must be very reliable. Therefore, the KMS 104 and KMS 105 microphone housings made of metal have thick walls, which, in addition to strength, provides effective protection against operating noise.
The protection system does not use porous foam materials, so there is no "fogging" or muffled sound. The protective meshes of the microphone capsules are made of durable steel wire, which also meets the requirements for reliability in live work. Safety nets use a combination of four types of cells of different sizes. It ensures the stability of directivity and frequency response in the frontal segment. If necessary, the grids can be easily unscrewed for cleaning purposes.
The KMS 105 mesh is made of steel, which is necessary to protect the capsule from mechanical damage in harsh concert conditions.
